Back in the Saddle

Today I went to the gym, and worked out. It was a pretty good workout. At the end I ran 1 mile. Nothing too grand. I wanted to make sure I could run again, and not strain anything, especially with work a couple of hours away. I was fine.

Tomorrow I'm planning an outdoor run. Wednesday is a training session with Josh.

The feet and ankle problems are life long. If I haven't mentioned it before, I will now. I was born with clubbed feet. Corrective surgeries meant the removal of tendons and bones. I am less flexible than other people. I was also told at one point I could develop arthritis. To be honest, this pain, while bad, is no where near as bad as it was when I was heavier. There were days I had to stay in bed.

I'm trying to find other work so I can get off my feet. If only someone would hire me...but that's a post for another type of blog. :-)

It sounds like the week off was good for your ankles and feet. I'm delighted and I hope your run today is really satisfying.

Your feet and ankles will need preventative maintenance, esp. in the coming year. After a day on your feet at work, you probably need to ice and stretch in anticipation of them hurting.

Every runner has their weak point -- that part of their body that's just not as well-suited to running. One of my friends has chronically tight IT bands (side of the thigh). My pelvis goes out of alignment really easily.

Yet we both did a marathon together last year (she ran, I walked).

We can't wait for our parts to hurt. If we're running regularly, we assume they're going to hurt and do things regularly to keep them mobile and happy. To keep the body in a condition where they're less likely to sideline us.

Even then, every runner has those days and weeks where they just have to back off their training and give the body a break.

Your feet and ankles are the same way. Even when you find the job that gets you off your feet, you will still be wise to treat your feet and ankles like a high-maintenance boss that needs a little TLC in advance of any problems.

I'm not trying to lecture (though I am doing that, sorta), just trying to be observant and maybe even a little helpful. I really really really want you to excel at this. :)
