The Torch Dims, and True Colors Shine

And so Gay Games VII came to an end yesterday afternoon in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. It was a terrific ceremony, far happier, more fun and less talk.

As the athletes waited to enter the stadium, the South African women's soccer team entertained us with singing and dancing. I have no clue what they were singing, but it was so much fun.

After a 2 hour wait, the gay athletes of the world entered the stadium together. No countriy labels. We all walked in as one group. We took our seats and then the show began.

There were singers, dancer, comedians, gay cowboys and the R.O.T.C (a gay rifle corps). Mayor Daley hailed the games as a success, and the deputy mayor of Cologne, Germany welcomed us all to come to the games in 2010.

The highlight of the ceremony was a lone violin player on the stage, and soon the crowd roared as Cydni Lauper made her way to the stage, in a rainbow Stature of Liberty outfit, singing "True Colors." I thought it was one of the best versions of the song I had ever heard.

The Gay Games flag has been passed to Cologne. The flame has been extinguished. The athletes of the world are heading home, or on to Montreal for the Outgames.

I was so thrilled to participate in and watch some of the sports. I wish could have done more during the games. I wish I had more folks to go to events with, but I still had a good time.

So what lies ahead. Will I go to Cologne in 2010? Why not? I would love to participate in another Gay Games.

Does the end of the games mean the end to my blog? No....I'll keep it going. I may have to change the name though. Stay tuned.

Charlie, my computer has been in hospital for a few days (since right after the 10K), so I just got to read the whole story all at once. You did so well! I hope you will get to go to Cologne (and to Whistler the same year? Woo-hoo!), and I look forward to reading your new blog.
