Gearing Up and What the Games Mean to Some

Today was an ActivTrax workout day. Yes, the training continues, after all tomorrow is another race. It is "cooler" today. It's in the 80's instead of the 90's-100. Tomorrow we head back towards 100.

With the 5K I am going for a personal best. of course with the heat, we will see if I can do it. My PR is 35:48. If I can bring that down a fraction I will be happy.

Today's workout was tough one, focusing on the chest. So my arms and chest are a bit sore, but I'm sure I'll be fine.

In today's Chicago Tribune there is a fascinating article about foreig competitors, and what it took for them to come to the games. Whether it be a lesbian soccer team from South Africa, or participants from Papua New Guinea, Chile or Uganda, many have come here to be themselves, and participate in sports they love. The guys from Papua New Guinea talked about how they did not state their reasons for coming to the U.S., and are afraid to talk about their Gay Games experience upon return, or they fear death. These are brave people in my opinion. We gays and lesbians in the U.S. may take for granted how important this event is.

Some I know wonder what is the point. When I read stories like the one in today's paper, I understand the point of the games.
